Forget boring rankings and dry numbers. Imagine: you are a young entrepreneur, full of ideas and energy. In one hand you have a notebook with a brilliant startup, in the other a one-way ticket. Where to fly to? Berlin? London? Or maybe you should take a risk and dash to Barcelona, where there is sun, sea and... a powerful technological ecosystem?
Today we are not going to sing dithyrambs to Barcelona, as tourist brochures do. We will take it apart, compare it with other European hubs and honestly answer the question: does the Catalan capital have real potential to become a world technological leader or is it just a pretty picture against the backdrop of the Sagrada Familia?

Round 1: Barcelona vs. the other techno giants of Europe |
Let's get straight to the point. Here's a table that unvarnished shows where Barcelona shine and where they still have work to do:
Factor | Barcelona | Berlin | London | Amsterdam |
Cost of living | Medium | Low | High | High |
Talents | Lots of young professionals, IT schools | Large pool of developers | International hub, top universities | Strong IT specialists |
Investments | They're growing, but not as much as in other hubs | Significant venture capital investments | Leader capital raising | Active venture capital market |
Infrastructure | Developed, many co-working spaces | It's a great one | One of the best in the world | High-quality |
Ecosystem | Many activities | Mature and dynamic | Global leader | Strong, focus on fintech |
Quality of life | High, climate, culture | High, cultural diversity | High, but expensive city | High, convenient city |
Round 2: Barcelona's strengths |
Sun, sea and... startups: Barcelona is more than just a tourist paradise. The city attracts talented people from all over the world, creating a favorable environment for innovation.
Mobile Capital: MWC, the world's largest mobile technology exhibition, is held here. This attracts investment and stimulates the development of mobile technology.
Creative Cluster: Barcelona is known for its design, art and architecture. It nurtures creativity and fosters startups in digital marketing, gaming and creative industries.
«Mediterranean Valley»: Catalonia is actively developing its ‘silicon valley’ with a focus on biotechnology, nanotechnology and renewable energy.
Round 3: Barcelona's weaknesses |
Bureaucracy: Spanish bureaucracy can be a real challenge for entrepreneurs (but by the way, we help you successfully complete this quest).
Language barrier: Although many people in Barcelona speak English, knowing Spanish will make life a lot easier.
Political instability: The Catalan issue creates some uncertainty for business.
Limited access to funding: Although the situation is improving, Barcelona still lags behind London and Berlin in terms of venture capital investment (however, our team is armed with all the necessary connections).
Round 4: Challenges and Prospects |
Barcelona is well positioned to become one of Europe's leading tech hubs.

Barcelona is a city with huge potential. It has all the necessary ingredients for success: talented people, developed infrastructure, and a comfortable living environment.
